Default New set of scales finished (?)

Just thought I'd share a couple of pics of the new set of scales I've made, which will go on one of the loose blades I purchased before this summer and which I am still restoring.

The wood is allegedly Sheesham, and I polished them to 600 grit, sealed them with cyanoacrylate (i.e. superglue) and sanded them back to 600 grit, then took them up to 1200 grit and applied carnuba wax as a final polish/protective layer. The wedge is made of plastic, the pin is nickelsilver and the collars are steel.

I don't know if they are really finished yet, though, since the wedge isn't perfect. I might remove the pin and redo the wedge before I put the scales on the blade.

The pictures probably have a little bit more red in them than the scales do in real life, but not much, and they probably have a little more yellow in them in real life too, but I didn't want to fiddle around too much with the pics adjusting colors etc.

    /Nicholas

Those look pretty good to me -- will be nice to see the blade that they marry up to.

    Default Finished the scales

I finished the scales today, by first taking them apart and sanding the wedge flatter (i.e. smoother) and then pinning them together again, and finally mounting the blade I had decided to use them for.

Here's a picture of the two (out of four) razors I have finished so far. The top one is the Domino, which I finished a while back, and the bottom one is a Hugo Rader, Solingen, which I mounted today. It still needs some work, since there are a couple of minor chips in the edge which need honing out (I'm awaiting my beginner set of NOS hones from Tilly at the moment). Both have the same wood for the scales.

The top one is the Domino

I have always wondered about the domino effect ,I know what it is now . Ah, we live and learn.
    By the way ,nice job
    kind regards Peter
PS unless you are going for the straight rigid appearance, and some do, I like to round the edges a bit ,I think it just softens the overall look a bit, but thats just me

Well, the blade has the word "Domino" etched on the tang inside an oval border, and a checkered pattern on the tang and tail, so I call it the Domino.

The scales are a bit "slab like", but somehow I think they fit the blades. I have shaved with the Domino, and it feels pretty good. Once I've honed up the Hugo Rader blade, I will shave with that one too. If the scales feel too clumsy, I may take them off and work on them some more.

I have two more blades to make scales for, and I will probably experiment a little with the scales for those since those blades seem to be a little thinner across the spine than the ones I have re-handled so far and would need a thinner wedge, I think.
