Thread: Dovo Style Washers/Rivets

Does anyone know what these are called or where to get them? They're like a pre assembled washer and pin on one side and a washer on the other so you only peen one side.

Sorry, Cant help in where to find them. I normally replace them with real pins when I find them.

Yeah those are the ones. Seem awful pricey on that store however. There was someone on the forum getting them in bulk from Europe but I couldn't find the thread.

I sorry Bob I may be naïve but thy still look like a brass nail. A 16 gauge brass rod with a small head on one end. Although the head on the ones in your link looks like it may have some sort of design stamped into it it.

Not say you are not correct but just trying to understand the difference.

It’s pretty easy to use brass rod. Clamp it (some folks use a drill chuck) and peen one end. Push it through with a washer, cut to length and peen with a washer on the other end.

I’ve used these “nails” as well as brass rod and there really is very little difference in effort or time required and it does not justify the added cost. Take the leap!

Yea, the end of the nail head pins is formed/stamped to look like it has a washer too not just a nail head. I think the 16 gauge rod is just a hair bigger in diameter too. Not saying they could not work but just that they are not the same.

Personally, I prefer to use a brass rod and peen the ends myself like the did in the old days. That would also mean making a couple of domed washers too. Like DZEC says it is pretty easy to do and I think it looks better too.

A Pdf from the Dovo site states that they are "German silver" which is an alternate name for nickel silver (generally 60% copper, 20% nickel and 20% zinc). They're far harder than the nickel-silver rods we get from the knife-making places, so I suspect there are several different formulations running around calling themselves "nickel silver" and they've got one that makes extremely hard rivets.

I get mine from the Invisible Edge in the UK. To make the shipping more economical, I generally add a razor or two to the order. Make sense, right? Not like I have a razor addiction or anything.
