Thanked: 2Old scales
Just picked up an old Joseph Elliott 6/8 frameback pretty sure it has the original wood scales. What is the best way to restore the scales? Soak in linseed oil for a awhile or just sand and give a good coating of oil until they quit taking it??

The original scales should not be of wood. As was said, pictures are key.

I rest my case.

Thanked: 154While original wood scales exist, even gold is more common...
Linseed would work I suppose, with the rule "every hour the first day, every day the first week, every week the first month, every month the first year".
But then again, all 5 of my wooden-scaled razors have well treated precious wood scales and additional treatment was not necessary, actually one was oiled and it was worseBeautiful is important, but when all is said and done, you will always be faithful to a good shaver while a bad one may detter you from ever trying again. Thanked: 3228I have made replacement wood scales from Olive Wood and finished them with multiple coats of crazy glue. It is a pain staking process, but the end result is worth the effort imo. There are posts on this site discussing it.

Thanked: 634If they are original they are horn and not wood.
Depending on condition. Unpin scales from razor. Soak in neetsfoot oil. Fill bug bites with super glue. Straighten between 2 flat pieces of wood and 'C' clamps (pour hot water over slowly and then let cool). Sand and polish and repin.

I have some "original" razors that are half wood scales.
When it came time to repair them you used what you had availiable.

Looks like horn too.
