Nice looking scales....and way to use your brain.
I am always looking outside the box for projects...
I don't look at something and see what it IS....but what it CAN BE!!!

I did the same thing a few weeks ago. The bone is relatively hard on a bandsaw blade, I used a cheap stamped blade that I have aside for doing more destructive cutting. Getting the bone sanded down flat and even takes some time but a 220 grit belt on a 6 inch sander makes relatively quick work of them. They are powder smooth. I took my scales out to 2000 grit and gave them a light dunk in some Danish oil to help seal the bone. It does smell but not nearly as bad as horn.

Great work Charlie. Must give it a try.
Are the number of T.P.I. critical for cutting bone or is a standard woodsaw blade ok ?The white gleam of swords, not the black ink of books, clears doubts and uncertainties and bleak outlooks.

I used a trashed woodworking blade. It was a 1/4 inch around 6 or 8 tpi I do not remember it was a blade that I ran into a drywall screw. A standard wood cutting blade works fine.

Thanked: 1262digging up old thread....
Would a hack saw work for cutting out the rough shape, then sand it down?

Yes it will work the bone is not a lot harder than wood. As a matter of fact I use a wood rasp to get my rough shape on my scales because I do not like the dust from sanding.
It will be a slowish process

Cannonfodder what did you use there for the dark spacers? I don't think those came stock from anyplace did they?
