I just remember Bill saying on his cd that he actually uses a 1" belt on his 2" sander. This allows for the nice inside curve work and other small spots. Does your decision have anything to do with not wanting another Delta? Some people think that the quality has gone downhill. I think it may be in their heads.

    No.
Actually I am very happy with my Delta/Porter Cable stuff. One other factor was that the Delta can only be used in a vertical position. The Hitachi can be used in either vertical or can be switched to a horizontal position. I have used it on scales and other small items and it has worked fine. I guess I won't be able to compare the two because I only have the Hitachi and have not used the Delta.
I do still recommend the Delta products. I have a compund miter saw, a small table saw, routers, circular saw, sanders, etc. They have all held up very well. I have not purchased a new Delta product in years so I dont know if they took a drastic change in quality.

I've actually checked them out. It would just cost as much with shipping anyway as for me to go buy one.

You don't really need adjustable speed for making scales. You really only need to be able to slow it down for metalworking. You might check out the local Sears store for a 1x42" grinder, or Home Depot. They both usually have them for $99. Sears carries Craftsman (obviously), while HD usually has Ryobi.
