Belt Sander
Anyone here who makes wood scales use a 1" belt sander to make fast work of scales? I'm looking for one to really speed up my production. They are pretty hard to find though and not the cheapest (though not a ton of cash). Is it going to make the difference that I think it will? I'm imagining the 8" side grinder will also make 1/8" pieces from 1/4" or a little less very quickly as well. That's a good thing. Does anyone else use one?

Hey Alex, be careful what you buy as far a belt sanders. Most of the cheaper ones aren't speed adjustable and will be too fast most of the time. The one I use is old, don't know what brand it is. I can slack the belt which does help in rounding out scales. Just look up any you might be interested in and then find the user reviews and see what people like about them or don't like.

I was being greedy and wanted to wait till Amazon had free shipping on this..But it's not a stock item anymore..Tho i'm still waiting.
I wanted a 2x42 to remove stock for knives..This is my ultimate affordable sander
Here's some info at AMAZON
And if anyone knows of where I can get a Palmgren 2x42 sander or another good one...Tell us...I prefer the 2x42 vs 1x32

I should have noted that Amazon, on occasion, would lower the price to $99 or $120 with free shipping..
I should just get the darn thing. Before one of you guys snatch this last one up

I think I'm gonna get the Delta SA180. That's what I'm leaning towards. This tool place by me has one for $109. Might as well huh?

Thanked: 213Sorry for my post after looking I realized you were not looking at a blade belt grinder, that is what I was talking about. And those are only made by a couple specialty company's and cost a fortune

Couldn't you just get a cheap belt sander and then a big variable potentiometer to control the speed. That would give you way more adjustably on the speed for less cash. Just an idea.

Alex,
I recently replaced my old SEARS belt sander. I looked at the Delta. Most of my power tools are Delta or Porter Cable. However I bought the Hitachi after consulting with a friend who does millworking. His idea (right or wrong) was that a 1" belt may actually cut into the wood you are not very careful. Since he is doing woodworking for 42 years I took his advise. I got a Hitachi SB10Y 4" belt and 8" disc. It was $129.00 in Lowes. It works GREAT. Also 4" is a common belt you can get anywhere. This however is a single speed. I am still trying to find an adhesive so I can make my own PSA 8" discs. If anyone knows of one please let me know.
Just my .02.
BTW the Delta and the Hitachi were the same price in Lowes.
