Default How do you know when a razor is too far gone?

My dad just called me to tell me he found the straight that he used in college but the blade has a pretty significant divot in it. I don't have pics but he describes it as a 1/4" along the edge of the blade and about 1/16" "deep". What would such a razor need? Regrind? Hopeless? When I take possession of the blade later this month I will rustle up some photos...

    update:
Judging by the fact that a bunch of folks have looked at this post and no one has replied, I am guessing that photos are a necessity lol

Actually, given the damage you've described, it sounds hopeless... please send that razor to me for proper disposal (see my other post, certified SDMI disposer).

But before you do, go ahead and post photos here so others may benefit from this experience.

There are a number of things you can do to resurrect a razor. Depending on what kind of grind you have it might just have enough edge and belly to take the edge that far down. If it's on the heel you can round the end and smooth it out to the edge. You can do the same thing to the point and have a smiling edge. Since there is a sentimental aspect to this razor. Just have the edge leveled out and mount it in a shadow box. If you want to use it, I think you would be better off having it professionally restored.

Thanks for the advice! I will post pics as soon as I can. Any advice on who could restore it for me? Bill Ellis maybe?

    Default HA!

Sure thing, I will send it right along as soon as you send the "core charge" to me. A mere 150 bucks!
