    Default My first attempt

Hi, I thought I should show you my first attempt at a resto.

It's a small W&B 5/8 wedge, it had some chipps in the edge so it's now a little under 5/8, scales where white plastic, and chipped, so they had to go as well.

The blade still shows pitting, and in the pic's the tang looks really bad, but in real life it's not that bad. All of the sanding was done by hand and I'm not sure if I want to go down that road again

Scales and spacer are oak and finished with 6 coats of danish oil, one the inside and outside of the scales, and 3 coats of wax on the outside, I think they turned out rather nice. It's peened together using brass rod and brass washers.

Honed it up tonight and did a test shave, fun razor to shave with!

    Lessons learned:

    - Hand sanding takes time, a lot of time
    - Never hone a wedge without taping the spine
    - Scalemaking require practice
    - Remeber to take a "before" picture of the razor

Since I did this as practice on a "junk" razor, I'd appreciate any feedback

Well, if that was a "junk" razor it certainly isn't now - very good job. That looks beautiful.

Hey! We both posted first attempts on the same day.... and I empathize with you. First razors are tough... but you did good! I like it. Most important is you learned a lot and you can appreciate other people's endeavors. Keep up the good work... the next one will be easier and more fun. I know.. I did my second one today ;>)

    Thanks guys

    freebird, ulven22, vegard_dino:

thanks, it's been a few broken scales in the process

    Jimbo:

It was one of those ebay specials that got tossed aside as junk due to pitting and chips, decided I wanted to try a resto and didn't want to ruin a nicer blade, so it was a great learning project, next up is a project where I'll give the dremel a go.

    Zomax:

First are though, but it's also a very good learning experience, I'll got some thuja wood waiting, just have to get some more practice first.
