It depends on the razor. I start with at least 3/16 more often it's a 1/4. This gives me enough material to work with to get to the effect, size, feel, weight that I envision for that razor. Thickness will also depend on what finish I use. If it's Tung oil then I leave a little more. If it's epoxy, I allow for the thicker finish and leave less.
