I was polishing the blade up a little with some MAAS and a dremel finishing abrasive buff, I got a little too close to the toe and POP!!!
Did it break because of pressure and vibration from the dremel or were you dremeling, with the rotation of the bit, INTO the edge () not away from it.

I'm a bit concerned that a big chunk of blade can just break off like that.

Definetley going away from the edge.

Still haven't found the broken off piece yet, and it's not in me either - I checked.

Good thing I was wearing safety glasses.

BTW the remains are at BST.

    Default couldn't you just....

ok, maybe it is me being crazy and this idea wouldn't work, but...

I shaved with the striaght for the 2nd time day before yesterday, very proud of myself, I even did the just under my nose above my moustache and inside my goatee (I shave the bottom lip) I was wondering when trying this if a small say 1" blade wouldn't be just perfect for that area inside the goatee?

what about fixing up the front edge then going about an inch back and taking the blade off up to the shank (whatever you call that part between the blade proper and the pivot point) and having a special little razor for the odd grooming tasks?

Were you working on an uneven or hard surface?

Was something under part of the blade that put pressure on the tip when you were pressing down?

I was working on a wooden table and I probably didn't have it flat on the surface.

    Lesson learned.

That's not rust, that is cell rot.

If you continue to restore it, you'd best replace those scales, because cell rot is irreversible (at least, noone here seems to have a cure). So even if you restore it fully, it will start to corrode again as soon as the blade is back between the scales.

About that tip breaking off: the same happened to me once. I cut off the rest with my dremel, use a drum wheel to make it into a notch point, and it became my best restoration so far.
