Default Making Domed Washer - Schematics

Here is one way to make domed washer. I did some reading in the threads and with out pictures, this is a combination of what I pictured in my head and what I made with the tools I had at home.

    1. Drill three holes overlapping into the anvil
      1. 9/64 first
      2. 11/64 about 2-3 washer diameters in depth
      3. 13/64 about 1 washer diameter in depth
    2. Put the 0/0 wide washer into the hole
    3. Push down gently on the washer with the awl and wiggle it around until the washer is domed nicely
      1. Don't wiggle too much or you will end up making the hole big to peen nicely.

I'm pretty sure that what I'm calling an awl actually is an awl (it looks like a screw drive that has been ground down to a conical point). I reckon a fine nail set should work too.

If its possible, I'd like other to show pictures or drawings of what they do. Also, let me know what you think.

    Thanks

    Mark

Looks good, but I think I could improve on it.

Take a piece of lignum Vitae or Ipe wood and shape the end to the rough inverse of the dish shape you made in the anvil.

Drill a 7/16" hole in the end, and then break off a 9/16" drill bit and embed it in the hole.

Now slip your washer over the broken off 9/16" drill bit, insert it into the 9/16 hole in the anvil, and give teh whole assembly a couple of pops with a ball peen hammer. Ipe or Lignum will force the washer down into the dishing, and the drill bit will keep it centered while you tap it.

Of course, I haven't tried this......

Thanks for taking the time to post this. I have wondered about techniques to do this in the past.

The only thing I would change is just use a scrape block of steel and dont drill in to your anvil

A Doming and Dapping set will do the job with a quickness, they are available on ebay through a seller called Qwatch along with all other kinds of cool Jewelers tools and STUFF....
Not that I don't think yer idea isn't a great one by making it yourself that I admire, but the sets are pretty inexpensive...
