Thanked: 5John Barber Scale Clean Up
Here's a link to my post about my John Barber acquisition.

The razor is in good shape, so I don't want to take it apart. Cleaning up the outside of the scales was very easy, but the inside is rough, with flaking/pealing layers of horn coming off. I would like to get rid of the flaking layers, and sand the insides smooth, but I'm not sure how to do it without taking the razor apart. I don't really want to take it apart because the scales are good, and the pins are nice and tight and look pretty good.
Any suggestions?

Use progressively finer strips of sandpaper about 6" long. Use them in between the scales as if you were drying your butt after a shower.

MAN, that blade would look great polished up!
I've restored this same blade by J.Barber, and they are fantastic shavers! I hand-sanded the blade on mine....
AS for the horn issues, the sand paper trick mentioned should work. Also, I add truoil (or another oil like camellia, or mineral) to a cloth and rub that between the scales (pass the cloth between the scales, add the oil to the cloth, and then work the cloth back and forth on the inside of the scales). This should condition the horn. The horn that is scaling/flaking is dried out. You might also be able to scrape off the dry horn with an exacto knife....
Nice find on the razor, and great clean up so far!
