Default newbie with a damaged razor project

hi obviously i am new here and pretty new to straight razors. i am looking for any advice on how to repair a razor i bought at my local knife shop. i bought it from the owner who is in his seventies and said he lost the thing for about 20 years and just recently found it. when he found it the blade was a little messed up but it was only $25 dollars. he suggested i use a coarser stone to get the basic edge back and then use the honing stone to actually sharpen. i would love any suggestions.

look very nice. i would suggest that you don't learn honing on this one, but instead send it to one of the honemeisters to get it honed for you. chances are you won't be able to get another puma in this condition for$25, and trust me, you don't want to mess up this one - there are plenty of other razors that you can use for practice honing

Holy Sheep Dip batman that was a great score !!!!!
Yeah I have to agree with Gugi that is not a "learn" how to hone razor that is a true keeper.....

    PS
Yeah after those pics I can see a little edge damage there or some roughness...

Yeah, that's gonna be a great shaver when you get the edge restored. I agree with sending it off to a professional for honing. I wouldn't want to mess up that edge, taking off more steel than you have to, while learning on it. Have a pro set it up right, then you can learn to maintain it.

+1 on sending it out. It will need to see a coarse hone to reset the edge and this is something that should be done by someone with experience. A newby can turn a beautiful razor like this into a puddle of swarth in minutes on a coarse hone.
