Ok... time for the so called "ask, duck and run" question. But first let me complement you on your astonishing work. It looks absolutely gorgeous! I always liked machinery like that... There was a place in my home town that would drive you guys insane: it was an enormous workshop (more like a factory...) that had lots of similar looking equipment. All of it was old and sturdy... But there is no place in modern market for places like that and it went bust. The chinese are indeed putting of some fierce competition with low prices (and lower quality...). I never actualy knew what they made there but... I liked it anyway!

So... the question: what is a lathe and what is it used for?
