Other Projects
Hi all,
I've been busy for a while now but not with razors. A friend of mine gave me a new piece of equipment for the work shop. I was hoping for a nice belt grinder but this is what I got. A 1934 South Bend Lathe, She's a little dirty and rough but she's cleaning up nice. I couldn't beat the price.....FREE. I've been wanting a lathe for a while now so I can get some projects out of the way. As it sits right now I've cleaned and oiled her up, done some run out checks, I should be able to run her. I still need a few odds n ends to get her spinning. All I can say is they don't build them like they used to.

South Bend... now they knew how to make a lathe, that thing will run forever, lucky you.
Mount a wheel on an arbor between the centers and you got your self a grinder.

No CNC here, this is what you would call old school.

Thanked: 3795Wow that's beautiful. It looks like something that fell off of a tank. That looks like a fun restoration job.

What you forgot to say is that it weighs a freakin' ton! I used to have one
I loved that thing, but the only problem I had with it was keeping good belt tension on it. I ended up having to make my own belt. I also got a nice chuck from Granger for it. Have fun with it!

Wow what a nice machine. As one of my instructors used to say it is the only machine that can make itself. There is nothing more versatile than a metal lathe.
I am green with envy

Well I've been doing some cleaning of the lathe that I got and I believe this machine is a diamond in the rough. I did run-outs on the spindle and they are as factory new. Another good cleaning, some paint and I've got a keeper. Here's some of the progress I've made with just some scotch brite and kerosene. The desk was a Craigslist freebie, so far $0.00 spent
Here's the next project to get the lathe running, this is the countershaft assy with another motor. I have my work cut out for me on this one.

Man, looks like you got everything for it... and it looks hardly used, just sat in storage.
So what projects you planning once you get it cleaned up?

From what I gather from the previous owner it sat unused for about 40 years. I have one project that I am going to do is make some domed washer dies. I might even try to get fancy with them.
