I was hoping to find local sources for some of these things (bolded in the quote). It's not easy. Does everyone just order things online or are there retailers I'm just not figuring out?

I found 1/16" brass rods at Hobby Lobby and a horrible "Jeweler's hammer". At Home Depot I found a larget 8 oz. ballpeen hammer but that seemd a bit big. Is that too big for this sort of thing?

I don't know where to even try after this (Ace maybe) for the washers. Maas and Flitz being MIA is the most disappointing. I didn't think I was going to have to order that on the web.

Any tips on types of stores that I might not have thought of at this time (like my mom telling me Glycerin can be bought at baking supply stores) would be appreciated. Heck, even pointing out the (probably already noted elsewhere) online dealers would be awesome.
