Looking for Restoration materials...
Can anyone point me towards resto. materials. I want to start restoring some of my older razors with bad scales. Also looking for things to help clean up the blades and put a mirror polish on. Are the rust erasers' I see at highland woodworking and the likes any good? Any tips would be appreciated! Thanks and God Bless!

Thanked: 13245Sandpaper, from 100-2000
MAAS and/or Flitz metal polish
1/16 Brass and/or Nickel Silver rod
#0 washers in Brass and/or SS
#0W washers in brass
Scale making Material, ie: Wood, Acrylic, Micarta, etc:
somthing to cut the material into shapes
A drill/Dremel
a small ballpeen hammer
a set of wire cutters
This alone can restore most razors...
After that you just make it easier on yerself by adding power tools...Last edited by gssixgun; 02-20-2009 at 07:06 PM.

I was hoping to find local sources for some of these things (bolded in the quote). It's not easy. Does everyone just order things online or are there retailers I'm just not figuring out?
Recent trips have included:
Lowes
Home Depot
Hobby Lobby
Michaels
Walmart
Colpar Hobbies
I found 1/16" brass rods at Hobby Lobby and a horrible "Jeweler's hammer". At Home Depot I found a larget 8 oz. ballpeen hammer but that seemd a bit big. Is that too big for this sort of thing?
I don't know where to even try after this (Ace maybe) for the washers. Maas and Flitz being MIA is the most disappointing. I didn't think I was going to have to order that on the web.
Any tips on types of stores that I might not have thought of at this time (like my mom telling me Glycerin can be bought at baking supply stores) would be appreciated. Heck, even pointing out the (probably already noted elsewhere) online dealers would be awesome.

Walmart sells Maas.
The 1/16 rods if lucky you can find at your local hobby store. If you don't have one like HobbyTown then it's going to be online.
The washers online.
A small peen hammer can be found at Michaels. I've seen them. (doesn't mean your local Michaels holds it)

Actually I found Glycerin at Vitamin Cottage a while ago. I just was using that as an example of non-standard thinking.
I don't know why my local Walmart sucks so much but I tried forever to find things there. I'll try a different one to find Maas sometime.
HobbyTownUSA used to be right down the street. They closed down about two years ago. I'm still upset about that.
I think I'm just have more of a bad luck with local supplies than the places I'm going. Sounds like I'm checking the right spots and it's just the inventory at those spots isn't what is expected. I'll go check some other Michaels/Walmarts and see what I can find.

Thanked: 13245Yeah my Walmart doesn't stock MAAS either. The true Value Hardware does though..
Also brass rod can be found at some of the Ace or True Value stores they will have a Koss metal display there... You can get liner brass and tubing there too...

I believe Rite-aid used to carry Maas awhile back.
Happich simichrome is another metal polish that some antique stores have.
If you look on the bay there is a person that sells premade pins/washer assemblies.
For the peening hammer, look to see if there are any bead/home made jewelry shops near you, or check pawn shops.
Looks like Glen and Max covered the rest of the stuff.
