There are others that are far more knowledgeable about this topic than I but this is a good place to start.

    Gary,

you could buy a dremel and use the felt pads. The turtle wax rubbing compound is a must have. You could buy some rouges but they work better on a real buffer/polisher with bigger wheels. But they can work on the smaller Dremel felt pads. Black emery, stainless, white and green are mostly used.

As to which Dremel to buy, that's a personal choice and budget one too. Make sure it can go as low as 5000 rpm and powerful enough. I don't know where you are located but a google search can help as to find a reliable store.

As always be safe when working and using a Dremel.

    Gary

I have been looking at getting a dremel as well, I was probably gonna go for the 400, it goes down to 5000 rpm, the 300 I believe does not adjust that low, not sure about this though, just from reading specs.

Some of the places I was looking at:

    Beesleys Tool Shop UK

    Dremel-Direct Jaymac (Derby) Ltd

I think even argos does one but it is only a stylus model and this might not be any good. Let me know if you stumble across a good deal.

    Regards

    Rob

If you're getting a rotary tool you might want to consider this one.

Amazon.com: Black & Decker RTX-6 2 Amp 3-Speed Rotary Tool with 30 Accessories and 2 Spring Clamps: Home Improvement

Its a 2 amp VARIABLE speed (I don't know why it says 3 speed) rotary tool that costs half of a comparable dremel one. It says the lowest setting is 12,000, I don't know if thats right, but it works fine for me. It accepts all attachments dremel makes. Has 5 yr warranty.

Rust can be gotten off with a wire wheel, tarnish responds well to radial bristle disks. Buffing wheels work ok, also.
