Good luck. This is a nice way to do something interesting while spending some time with your dad. I know my little girl likes to be in the basement while I am working on something, and hammer nails in wood and things like that.

It's true. My dad is a mechanic and he works long hours so some weeks I hardly saw him as a kid. Some of my best memories are of hanging out in the garage with my dad

Its something I've really missed since I attended boarding school and now college

I first got started making scales when I was living in a hotel room for a year on active duty. I had a coping saw, a hand file and a fair amount of sandpaper. I also would apply finish, but only when the weather was nice and the windows were open. I had a dremel, but I didn't use it much, as I would slip with it nearly every time.
It doesn't take much to get started.

    Default Update Here

So the guys at bellforestproducts are great, the problem is shipping. I just can't swing $20 for just wood without knowing how things will turn out.

My new plan is as follows: I'm going to order a huge bag of washers from microfasteners, pick up some walnut at the art supply store in town, which also happens to sell 1/16" brass rod. One of my roommates has several saws, and there is a hardware store in town to pick up a cheap hammer and some sandpaper.

I figure this way I can at least get a feel for what I am doing, at about half the price of using some nicer woods. I can always pick up some fancy woods if everything goes well after all.

Sounds like a good plan - say, where are photos of these first scales, anyway?

I will be sure to upload them as soon as I get them all put together. I have some tools on their way here as we speak, hopefully I can get it all together no hassle.
