I know its early but...
I am a college student at Clemson University in South Carolina. I am also very interested in at least trying to make my own scales. Here the trouble begins. While my dad is a mechanic and longtime hobbyist with an incredible array of tools, he lives in Indiana. I won't be home until just before Christmas.
So I called today about having a little father son bonding time over break (basically me playing about with his saws, dremel, and ball peen hammers in an attempt to make something resembling scales). Looks like it's a deal and I can get to work as soon as I get home from the airport.
I know this is early, but I just had to share the news because I am super excited about the prospect, and this is the only place where people can really understand why I would be so excited to do hard labor in an attempt to spruce up "outdated" technology.
I will be sure to post pics in a new thread with my results (and likely more than one trial and error set just because I have no pride )

Congrats!
Hey man I completely understand! You have every reason to be excited. I will soon be building my first set of scales out of antler to refurbish my father's old razor. But I am in a different boat in that I am gonna give the razor back to him so I have to use his tools without letting him know about it! Back to the point, you should definitely post some pics when you are through. And for that matter post some pics of the process. I know for me personally it really helps to see the process others use.
And as to "outdated" technology, well I always tell people that "new" technology doesn't always mean "better" technology. Often it's just more convenient. I see no shame in being excited to refurbish a tried and true instrument of manliness!
Best of luck!

Good luck with your resto. Looking forward to seeing your progress. I've been putting together a small area in the basement to do restorations this Winter. I'm looking forward to it as well.

Drew,
good for you and to top it off you still have a few months to gather and learn all the tips and tricks here at SRP.
Looking forward to your future work.

Sounds like you're already hooked. What can I say ?
Go fer it !!!The white gleam of swords, not the black ink of books, clears doubts and uncertainties and bleak outlooks.

Good luck Drew! Careful though, this is a powerful addiction you are going to be toying with... seen lots of guys lose their willpower to this monster, very few ever beat it. Can't wait to see what you come up with.
And SC isn't too far from Charlotte if you ever need a hand or anything
Cheers!
