Thin cut 1/8 inch wood
Guys I know a ton of you are asking me where to get scale stock pre-planed to 1/8 inch for scales...
I use mostly blocks and rip my own, pretty much I use Bell Forest Products, just because of the shipping costs, and that fact that they have great customer service...
But for those of you that want 1/8 stock they just added some more exotics to their supply, check it out here..
Thin Stock Lumber | Exotic Wood, Birdseye Maple, Curly Maple, Tiger Maple
ps: I have no ties to BFP other than being a customer of theirs...

It's true. The wenge is there at my request even though I have yet to purchase any (which I feel pretty bad about after asking them all about it)

what do you guys think of Rockler woods, they sell precut too and its cheaper. they only do not have such a big variety.

I have looked at the 1/8" wood at Rockler and found it to be OK. What I do is look at bigger pieces of wood. Some of the cull cute they have there that either is to funky looking for furniture making. I figure that the scales I make are really only 6" long and the cull cuts have very interesting figure in it. So, I buy the cull cuts and then rip them into 2 1/2 - 3" wide strips. Then I re-saw them into 5/32" thick pieces and make sure they are bookmatched. Then I double stick tape them together and cut out on a scroll saw. The reason for cutting thm at 5/32 is that the scales needs to be sanded nice and clean and 5/32" is perfect for me. Plus when I purchase a nice thick slab(4/4) the cost is reduced even more.

IME rockler wood has been pretty ho-hum. I mean the wood is just kinda plain. I usually rip my own stock that I select for figure etc. but these guys have some good stuff at bellforestproducts.com Originally Posted by mainaman

I agree Glen. I just thought I would share what I have found through trial and error. I have looked at Bell wood and they offer some very nice wood. I have also order wood from Gilmer Lumber from Portland, OR. the have some real nice wood but you will need to cut it yourself.
