to re-scale or not
Well, I sat in on my first chat tonight and my questions got answered (thanks to all btw). I had a question about rescaling or keeping things original. They wanted pix so here ya all go. The wedge is james barlow and sons that has very little rust but some hone wear. the boker but quite a bit more oxidation. Please give me your thoughts (sorry if pix are too much)

Thanked: 5I personally would not rescale either.
Both of them look like the scales are in really good condition.
They should come up great with a clean and a light buff.
Especially with the Boker as you will find it hard to match new scales to the tang.
To each his own though, if you are after a change, than no-one can tell you otherwise. The only thing I would suggest, is to be careful when removing the old scales, as I'm sure someone would be more than willing to purchase them off you

if it were me, I'd personally try to restore the scales and not replace. Then you can add em to the wiki.

I wouldn't rescale, only clean them up a bit... you'd be surprised how nice some old scales can look... those don't look to bad to me..
I've been looking some more and I really think that boker is going to clean up like a champ...Last edited by Del1r1um; 11-11-2009 at 05:38 AM.

I think both scales will look great after a good cleaning and you should keep them

I think it would be a shame to rescale that Boker.

Consider the source... I mean, look how many posts I've got... but honestly, I'd give them a cleaning style of makeover and then consider rescaling.
I'm not a fan of vintage scales. As much as they may be appealing to traditionalists, I personally think that some of the scaling artists that frequent this and other shaving forums can do amazing things with scales. If its not pure ivory or some kind of rare and valuable material, I can take it or leave it. I'm shaving with it. Its mine.
I don't get sentimental about it. Maybe that makes me a 'hole' of some sort, but honestly I like what I like... thats all that counts... nostalgia need not apply.
