Mama said there'd be days like this...
Finally got my legacy razor near completion. The only thing missing was to replace with scales with a set of Dovo ebony that came in the mail and refresh it's honing and viola...
The original celluloid scales never did fit right anyway but always figured it was warped scales. Sooo, I snapped the pivot pin and fitted up the new ebony scales. That's when my day went to hell. Just as I was feeding the pin through the pivot, the blade got free and swung around on the newly threaded pin and DING...hit the mini anvil right on the edgeThis dinged the blade about halfway through the edge sigh. Well, I guess I'll be honing it up anyway. So I closed the razor to set it aside for a couple hours so I could cool down...yeah, I was pretty hot at that point. When I closed the razor, the darned thing wouldn't fit right. Apparently great-grandad didn't have the forthought to check to see if the shank of his new razor was straight...I KNEW at that moment the reason why the celluloid scales weren't quite right.
It took me the better part of the rest of the afternoon to get everything honed out and ready to go again, but great-grandad's razor is back up and running

How'd you fix the tang?
Good to hear you got it back to being a shaver!

No way to really fix a tang like that...It closes WAY off center but alas, I'll never sell it off because of it's faults. Closing it turns the ebony scales into a torsion bar that makes the blade jump out about 1/8" as measured from the toe. Funny thing is when I pinch the scales, the blade nearly jumps into correct position from the torsion from the tang. Great-grandad had the first and only assisted open straight razor

It just goes to show what all restore guys sometimes (most of the time) have to deal with. Unforeseen obstacles.
Glad you got it all back up and running.

Thanked: 151
I hate you had to go through all that but stuff happens. Many who have seen my re-scales know that centering the blade is one of my many weak areas. However, I have found that drilling the pivot holes one side at the time enables me to put it in crooked in order to center the blade. It isn't pretty but it keeps the blades from scrubbing.
Congrats on getting it finished though!
