Default Tale of the Genco Vanadium

    $12.95 from E-bay.

I polished it with sandpaper and Flitz. 220 - 2500. 2-3 hours, cramps in my hands, but it turned out nice.

It honed like a charm. So easy. A tiny little bevel, barely visible. No microchipping, a beautiful polished edge. Not even enough hone weqr to say so, despite considerable loving time on the 1k making it sharp and even.

Shaving? What a shaver! Like butter! What a stinking pleasure to use.
I shaved with it 3 days straight, it stropped easy between shaves. I dried it carefully after the third shave, so pleased with my new tool.

Then.... I dropped it. right in the sink. Now it's garbage. I haven't dropped a razor in 10 years, but I wasn't really feeling well, out of sorts if you know what I mean. Crap.

End of my tragedy for the day. Time for some Wild Turkey.

    Sorry to see that
Is it just me or does it look like your getting a slightly shorter razor after a bit of playing around?

I hate to see that, especially after finding a razor at a descent price on the bay...

I dropped the first razor I ever rescaled (with Joed's help). I kept the pieces, though.

Bummer, but these things happen. Don't beat yourself up. Happens to all of us. Another one is down the road and better too.

I can almost feel my heart crack along with the blade! I join you in toasting to the loss of sweet steel.

Vanadium explains the finger pain. It makes for very fine durable carbides. Really sorry about the heartache. Hope you can salvage something.

Sorry to hear of your loss especially after all the work. Dropping the blade is always in the back of my mind. Keep the pieces as a reminder.

That sucks. I have one exactly like that, pretty much new stock pristine and it does shave wonderful. That blade is not trashed. While the end is cracked, it only looks to go about 1/4 of an inch, or is is hairline split further up the blade? It could be easily re-cut.

It would just be a hair shorter but still very serviceable. I have repaired a few like that. It just takes a low speed cutoff wheel and a slow continuous water drip to keep the steel cool and lubricated while you cut it. Then a light grinding wheel action to smooth and roll the hard edges, buff and you are back in business. Takes all of a half hour to do. I had a thread on how to do it somewhere.
