Thanked: 67big dremel mandrels?
In support of my disturbed First Big Restoration Project I have picked up a Coticule, a new Dremel 300, some Dremel bits and bobs, and a half dozen cakes of abrasive compounds (Polishing Compound | Metal Polishing Compounds | Plastic and wood finishing compounds).
Let's just say that I've completely lost the plot and am now in the process of polishing the five desperate razors that i picked up on ebay. I'll be happier, and so will my girlfriend, when they all are polished and shave-worthy. That I generally hate shaving, wear a beard, and only shave my neck are besides the point; I'm fully committed to this project for the duration of the summer as it provides a nice distraction from an otherwise consuming and obscure master's dissertation. I'm in, and I can't be stopped.
Until now, it seems.
At the Polishing Shop, here in sunny sunny England, they have a special on small Sisal mops (Special Offers), and I've purchased some, along with a few similarly sized felt wheels. They measure, in a typical non-committal English manner, either one inch x one inch, or 25mm x 25mm, depending on your education and disposition. In either case, they seem to be too large for my Dremel mandrels, and have prevented me from attacking the razors with enough vigor to remove the stains and scum that haunt me when I pick them up.
Does anyone know where a larger mandrel can be found?
These razors will shine like a mirror when I'm done. Of this I am sure. How long this takes is another matter altogether. Once these are shiny I can properly comb the British countryside for a full wedge, barber notched Wade & Butcher in desperate need of restoration, so that it can sit spectacularly unused near the mirror that reflects my bearded cheeks.
Cheers,
Mark

Thanked: 2591the biggest I have seen is 2" Diameter cotton sewn wheels and 1" felt wheels. Those work great for razors, I got them @ widget supplies a while ago.

Thanked: 67Thanks. but I've already purchased the one-inch wheels. I simply have no mandrel big enough to hold them. I'm looking for large mandrels, not large wheels.

Thanked: 67The wheels are here Special Offers and I've recieved them already. The holes are tiny, and look like they were made for a dremel.

Thanked: 2591the biggest a Dremel can hold is 1/8 , you can try for something like this:
1/4 inch Large Head Screw Mandrel: Widget Supply
but I think 1/4" head is the biggest you can find for Dremel. If you can find longer screw for your mandrel it will be able to hold your 1" sizal wheels in placeLast edited by mainaman; 06-08-2010 at 11:37 AM.

Thanked: 67Nope. They don't seem to have a 1-inch long shank. Nor do any others on that site. The wheels are an inch deep and an inch wide, and seem to have the standard mandrel hole size.
If the wheels are truly designed for a dril, then what would I use to attach them to the drill? I don't mind using a drill.

Dremel makes a drill style keyless chuck for use with its tools. Amazon.com: Dremel 4486 MultiPro Keyless Chuck: Home Improvement. That may be big enough.

Thanked: 67I must not be clear enough: The mandrel supplied with a Demel is designed to hold a felt wheel that can vary in width but is approximately 1/4 inch deep. This means that the screw only needs to be 1/4 long. The wheels I've picked up are one inch deep, and need a mandrel that has a screw that's a bit longer than an inch.
Take a look at the 1"x1" Sisals here Special Offers
How would I use these with a dremel?

Ah ok, I see what you mean. I dont know if Dremel do a holder with a longer screw, but it may be worth contacting them to find out.
Failing that, what I'd do is find a wood screw thats long enough to take the wheel and cut off the head of the screw to make an impromptu wheel bit. Just just screw the wheel onto the cut down screw, the same as you do with the little felt wheels you get with the Dremel. The unthreaded part of the screw is the part you'd mount in the Dremel chuck.
You'd need to make sure that the screw thread worked with the direction of rotation of the Dremel though, otherwise the wheel would unscrew itself with use.
I dont think I have used the word "screw" in any post more than I did here lol..!
