Thread: Finally went out and did it!

I gave her a 30min soak, a good rinse and then a bit of work with the CLR metal polish. It got most of the staining off, except for some hard to reach places, which means the temper's fine. After another rinse, I worked her over on the Japs. Couldn't resist shaving with her.
The Satinedge definately needs more work on the hones. Even though it removed the worst of 2 days worth of growth, she still left too much after 2 passes and going against the grain was impossible.
Therefore, I'll do a couple more pyramids tomorrow and test her again. For now, she's not performing nearly as well as Taylor's.

Not necessarily. The stains from distempered fire will still come off with metal polish.

I gave her another honing and it passes the HHT. Since the Japs cut slowly compared to Nortons, I modifed the pyramid for the last run (after 2 standard pyramids): 1/10, 2/10, 3/10, 2/10, 1/10, 1/10. Then I stropped it (35 passes) and I'm gonna test it tomorrow. I wanted to do it tonight (so I could also test my new C&E brush), but I want to keep it consistent since I'm also testing Colleen's soaps. If it can hold an edge after 5 shaves, I'll assume that the temper survived the fire.

This was my worst shave ever since the Pakistani. I'll have to start from scratch... First some rigorous honing on the 4k, and then I'll give it a couple of classic pyramids. If it doesn't work right after that, the coticle will be its final chance before I give up on it and set the Dovo scales aside for another blade.

the dubl duck scales can't be that bad. just keep honing it until, don't give up!

what c&e brush did you get.... the $35 best? i have it and like it a lot.

The scales have melted and shriveled out of shape. Zoom in on the e-bay pic and you'll see some of it, but you'd have to see it in person to appreciate the extent of the damage. What I'm planning on doing now is to reform the edge (on the 4k and with more pressure) and then hone it again. As for the brush, yeah, that was the one I got but I'm waiting to complete the testing of Colleen's soaps before I start using it, since the testing started with my el-cheapo Wilkinson brush. Tomorrow's the last stage of testing. However, I'm gonna do it with Taylor's b/c the Duck left my neck RAW.

i'm sorry, i meant the dubl duck blade can't be that bad....the scales are terrible.

Could be if the fire that destroyed the scales also killed the temper. That's how they used to do it with swords in the old days. Threw them into the fire. In any case I spent A LOT of time tonight working on this blade. Lisa thought I went psycho.
1) First I killed the edge with circular honing on the bottom of the 4k stone.
2) Then I ran like 3 standard pyramids.
3) At a certain angle, it looked like it still had some chipping. In retrospect, it could have been water...
4) So I killed the edge with circular honing again..
5) 2 more pyramids
6) Finished with a modified pyramid 1/8 1/8 2/8 3/8 2/8 1/8 1/8 1/8.
7) It passed the HHT with flying colors and the edge feels better on the thumb than the Taylor's edge.
8) Cleaning with alcohol
9) 35 passes on the "strop"
Tomorrow I'm shaving with the Taylor's, just in case. I'll give the duckling another shave test on Monday evening. If it leaves my face as raw as it did this morning, I'm getting a microscope lol

Update on the Satinedge:
1) It gave me a comparable shave to the TEW with no razor burn. Therefore, I did NOT throw my $$$ away on the razor or the scales It didn't perform quite as admirably in the heavy growth areas, but that could also be attributed to the smaller size.
2) It's making it into the rotation, thus creating the minimum conditions for one: at least 2 razors lol.
3) I can't wait to get the coticle and see what I can do with the blades then.
