Thanked: 2If anyone is interested...
I visited one of the exotic wood stores in my area today and they have whole Briar burls in various sizes. All are unprocessed, still covered in bark and bits of dirt. Most are about the size of a cantelope 6-10" round, but not perfectly round. Roundish. Cost is about 6$/lb and most were in the 7-10lb range. I'm not looking to make money, just offering the source if anyone is interested. I'm travelling to the USA in about a week or two and could send from there if desired. Let me know.
I'll be hitting the other exotic wood store this saturday and I know they have Briar, but I believe the have more processed portions suitable for pipes rather than longer scales though. I'll keep and eye out if anyone is interested.

If scales are impractical, than that stuff sure would make a nice brush. Matt how much would a nice silver tip brush out of that run.

Thanked: 2Ray,
Like anything, it depends what you are looking for. I carry pure grey, pure black, best, silvertip and super silvertip in about 5 or 6 sizes ranging from 18mm (surprisingly able to whip up a storm) up to the some what luxurious 30mm monster.
It depends on what you like. I know guys that use 20-22mm knots and are happy with them, no desire to got a larger brush at all. I also know guys that have 30mm travel brushes.
If you are interested in a brush I can price out an appropriate blank on saturday. If you have an approximate size preference it would greatly help in an accurate estimate.
If anyone is still interested in Briar I'd be willing to split a portion of one. Let me know.
Thanks,
Matt

Matt, I am interested. I have some Briar blanks but no lathe (i was trying my hand at pipe carving). I would be interested in a 20mm knot size brush, silvertip. My e-mail is in my profile.

Matt, I misread your note. I thought you were offering to make a Briar handled brush and was going to price out the cost. sorry for the confusion.

Thanked: 2Oh, Ray!
Are you still in Japan? I thought you would have been back for a while now! So have you used the brush? That Bethlehem Olive wood is amazing stuff and an absolute joy to work with. Certainly I could do a brush in Briar burl. The price would depend on the cost of the burl, though I expect with a similar knot it would be close to the cost of the Olive Brush. I'll price Briar in the morning when I get to the exotic wood store.

Nope haven't gotten to use the brush. Two more weeks and than I'm headed home . If I remember correctly I had the olive done in a 22 would like to go up to say a 25. I think a 30 would be a little to large.
