Thanked: 8Walnut Bengal
I've just finished my first set of scales with liners. I must sing praises of Bill Ellis's Blog for assistance. Hurraaayyyyyyy....Thanks for all of your efforts in setting that up and sharing Bill.
I don't think the scales (walnut) needed much support but I wanted to do thin wood, thinner brass sheet and a red plastic liner and keep the whole lot flat sided.
The blade was a rusty old Bengal 6/8 which has had some heavy wet/dry work and now needs some honing and stropping etc..
I'm very pleased with the outcome, my best efforts to date for sure. I even made the spacer out of brass (bloody hard work).
The wood has been well coated with dutch oil, dried and buffed up with 0000 grade steel wool. Then a coat of Briwax antique wood polish for a nice gloss and extra proofing.

Thanked: 2Very nice. The wood gives the razor a vary classic feel but the metal, red liner combo lends the piece a modern edge. I think it all works well together.

Thanked: 8Thanks for the compliment LX but Vlad is a true master at this.
I'm still in the early stages of the disease.

Gotta start somewhere
I'm going to try a little original scale making myself soon. As soon as i get the blanks that Vlad sent me as a matter of fact. I'm not quite sure yet what I'm going to do But I have a few idea's and might have an original trick or two up my sleeve. I just hope I can pull it off.

Thanked: 8Well LX, I say go for it.
I must admit to having wasted a few nice pieces of wood and numerous brass pins and washers.
My advice is to try it on some ordinary stuff first then go for it. You soon learn a few tricks and processes that make life easier.
Post your efforts of course.

Thanked: 0Very pretty work! I like the way the red brings out the similar tones in the walnut.

Very sweet. You've got excellent taste in scale material.
No offense intended, but the scales you are making look a little on the chunky side. May I ask your reasoning behind this? Is it a practical or ęsthetic decision?
