Default Safety Precautions Working with Cyano & Wood

    Hi all,

I will be embarking on making my first set of scales soon (Seno Rosewood) and coating with Cyano (CA) glue.

Do any of you take any special precautions when working with either woods or CA glue?

I understand some woods can be toxic and being an ex Modeller know how the fumes from Cyano can give you a fair whack.

    Cheers

    Where a mask when sanding/cutting.

Umm.. With CA i usually just wrap some tape around my finger and use that as the applicator. The rest is patience.

The only thing other than what you mentioned is that some folks get lung/bronchial aches and rashes from some of the tropical/ aromatic/oily woods like cocobolo, ebony, and Teak. Even cedar and redwood can cause some folks lung distress when worked. If if has as strong smell, caution will be needed in the form of a good respirator and maybe even blue urethane surgical gloves. Those you would be wearing working with CA any way.
Much better to be safe than sorry later! I have developed a sensitivity to pine!

If you use cotton rags to apply it, the little bits you put aside after each application get VERY hot and may catch fire on their own. This is especially true if you with the thin CA.

Don't stand or lean over the uncured CA. I got a couple nice eyefulls of the fumes, and it is a fairly unpleasant experience.
