Advice on a blade chip
Lately I've been buying razors with more obscure names. I got tired of having the same old razor every Tom, Dick, and Harry was shaving with. I went out and got a straight razor with the markings Thoe. A. Koch and on the other side marked LUCIFER with a hand holding a torch. Scales were garbage but the seller assured me that there was nothing wrong with the blade(as I'm sure they always do)
Well, my goal was to restore the thing as it would make for one hell of a conversation piece(no pun intended), especially sitting right beside my Black Demon. I get the razor in the mail and I take it out of the box and there is a chunk taken out of the blade approximately 3/8" away from the heel making almost a "sharkfin"-like chip about 3/8" into the blade itself.
My question is, what in the world can I do with this thing. It is too uncommon for the scrap heap, but I'd still like to see it function. Thanks for the help in advance guys.

Thanked: 3795First, did you SEE the blade before buying it, or was the chip obscured by the scales? As long a the chip was not evident in the photo, you can get a full refund from the seller if you want to do so. This is because the seller lied about the condition of the blade.
If you want to keep it, then advise the seller that you want to have the price adjusted do to the damage to the edge. Given the extent of the chip, the blade should be quite reduced in price.
Now, what you might be able to do with it, since it is so close to the shoulder, is to cut out the chip coming out from the shoulder in an arc to include removal of the chip. Several members have posted such modifications in the past. You will get MUCH better advice on how to proceed if you provide a photo of the blade.

Thanked: 1263Umm ya, if the seller said there was nothing wrong with the blade thats an obvious misrepresentation of it. I'd send it back for a full refund. That's slightly more than a chip in the blade...lol

I would hate to be the one to hone that out and you would lose 1/2 the blade grinding it out.

His rear end has already been ripped. I recieved the razor about a week ago and I got the money back (only $16). To make things worse, as I looked at it under my Jeweler's Loupe there is a crack that goes another 1/8" past the vertical part of the "sharkfin". Could I still use the thing if I cut it out like in the image below, or is my best bet just scrapping the thing. I have 10+ razors, but I'm a user and not a collector. If I can't use it I'll can it.

It's more work than it's worth, but if you do fix it it would be good having a shorter cutting edge for under the jaw line.
