Good looking straight! The idea of using something generation after generation is what drew me into straight razor shaving. You definately found the right place to learn everything you could possibly want to know.

Thanks guys. I appreciate your advice. I will more than likely send it to Aussie to get honed. I'm just trying to see if there is anyone here in Auckland first.
    Thanks again.

Beautiful razor. I'm so jealous you have a razor passed down to you! Treasure it always.
I'm a sucker for a stamped tail. Giggity.

I'd give my left testicle for a razor my grandfather used and probably throw in the other one for one in that shape.

Yeah, I'm seriously stoked to have it. It's a long story but basically it's the only thing I have from my Grandad. Huge sentimental value

I'm going to give my standard advice for this situation...

Oil that razor and put it away for a few months. Don't shave with it even once. Get yourself another razor and learn how to shave with it. That way you can learn the various ways to drop, ding, and/or destroy a razor without sacrificing one with sentimental value. Only after you are confident in your newfound abilities should you consider using your grandfather's razor.

Great advice Utopian. Keep that heirloom as pristine as possible.

Great Advice! I second the motion!

If I hadn't been using other very reasonably priced razors to learn with, I would never, ever, used my restored Great Grandfathers razor! I'm still keeping it very well oiled and only use it on special occasions!! Glen did such a wonderful job of bring it back from the dead, I'd hate to be the one that killed it once and for all! Check out the before, during and after pics!

You take care of that Heirloom! It's Family! I wish you smooth shaving!

+1 To Ron's advice. Feel free to get it honed, but set it aside until you're UBER-confident (incredibly confident) that you won't accidentally break it.

Pick up a good cheap razor (price, not quality) and learn to shave with it. Looks like the one you showed pics of will work. Send 'em both out to the same guy for honing, and while you wait read everything you can here on SRP. By the time you get them back you'll be an expert and ready to take that first shave!

So far as guys in the Southern Most nation of the world, I know there's at least one other member down there. Maybe more. Search the user list under community in the menu bar above for guys located in NZ. Might find somebody local-ish who can hone your razors. If not, there are several members is Australia.

By now you may have already done so...in that case, please keep us updated as things progress!

    Peace,
