I'm pretty sure that the regular dremel spins just like a regular drill while the engraving tool actually moves in and out or towards and away from you as you hold it. Think along the lines of a hand-held jackhammer That would be the engraving tool.

The engraving tool doesn't spin, like the regular Dremel. Instead, it reciprocates. So it's like a tiny hammer pounding a zillion hits per second. It is, essentially, a tattoo gun with a tiny hammer-head instead of a needle.

I have done a similar thing with the reciprocating carving head which came with my rotary tool, I need more practice but it seems to work. Basically the carving head has a collet which can accept the same size "bits" as fit into the rotating head so I just took a grinding bit which was not needed and cut the end off leaving just the shaft.

I also use a rotary tool but the engraver Is more like a vibrator. It works with a tiny doamond on the tip and goes back and fourth and not spinning around. What we are really talking about is a mini-rivet gun. (not pop-rivet)

Do you use the same method as Jeltz or something different? I've tried peening a few times with my hammer but just get below average results.

I think thats pretty much the same with the carving head I'm using but the amount of lateral movement would probably be greater.

I am not farmilier with the jeltz metod...would like to see it though. Would you have a link?
The hammer method just takes a lot of patients. I have better luck with my 4 oz. if I remove the handle, makes for a more controled strike.

It's the method he described just above your other post, I must have misinterpreted your response. I thought you mentioned using a rotary tool to peen and I was just asking what method you use. My mistake!
