You are correct. The main difference with the thin steel is that there isn't as much material to absorb heat, so it heats up much faster. The transition from feeling hot to being way too hot happens pretty rapidly.

Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government.

    Thanks HNSB...
This brought to mind something else... Has anyone ever seen a straight razor with some thing in the new "super steel's"? Such as I mentioned like S90V, or ZDP-189?

Again I'm used to talking about steel like S90V, S30V, 154CM, ZDP-189, 440C etc... Granted these are types of stainless steel. Not high-carbon.
The edge of your razor is so thin that it will disperse heat incredibly quickly. This means that the amount of energy, heat, passing through the metal is much higher than you can feel by touching it-- it is there, and gone, and the temper ruined long before the rest of the razor is anywhere near 200 degrees...

Basically, you want to handle that razor like it's your only kidney.

Got some sewn 4" wheels from Caswell. They work great on my 3,600 RPM machine. Thanks for everyone's help!

What do you guys think about this grinder from Harbor Freight? After looking at the manual (linked to the product page), the RPMs go from 0-10,000. I called HF, and they will sell it for $32, plus about $8 shipping. Follow the link here:

Ya can't beat that price. I buy alot of hand tools there but I have yet to buy an electric one. That grinder may be my first one as soon as I get a garage to use it in anyway.

I went ahead and ordered it because they have the 20% coupon code listed on the HF page. It was 20% off the already discounted price! So it was $27.99, and with tax and shipping, it was just under $40.

Honestly, I wouldn't get near that with a razor for love nor great sums of money...

My only assumption is that he is only going to use the flex shaft--like a dremel. Hopefully he does not intend to use the grinder wheels.

If you have dedicated wheels for each grit (optimal I feel and just JMO)Spray the wheel with WD 40 (lightly)Apply the compound, over a little time it will become impregnated.messy at first but works for me.
