There are many answers in the Auction Talk. There are many posts dealing with alterations and bad sellers or buyers.
It is worth looking over the posts about once a week or more just to commiserate with those what may have got bit! I have been bit and anyone collecting has been bit. I have been a shop person all my life so i can see", SOMETIMES," the modifications to a blade especially when the tip/toe has been modified, the blade shortened, or the heel reworked, or some other ruse has been used to make a "RARE L@@K" offering." That may not make the razor a dud, but it should not command the prices that some of the clowns want.
As always, the goal is to become familiar with the habits and range of the game you wish to hunt!
