Best getting started guide is right there in Glen's supplied link.
Practice on any sort of material. No need to have a razor in hand. Old clipboard? Cut it up and use it for practice. What ever approx 1/8" material you might have is good to practice on. Take 3 pieces of the material (one to mimic the tang) drill a hole through it, peen away.
I don't like a divot on my peening surface, and prefer a sold flat surface like a jeweler''s block. Many others do prefer the small hole in the striking surface. That's part of the fun, finding what works for you.
Use wire cutters to cut your rod. Preferably flat side, so the dykes do not cut a V in the rod.

The more you do it, the better you get. Don't feel discouraged if it doesn't look perfect the first time. We all had to start somewhere and trust me, nobody made a perfect ultimate looking peen the first time around. Practice, practice and practice.

Thanked: 20Patience is key to successful peening. Light taps, don't try to rush it with the home-run swings. I use a small jeweler's anvil, no divots, and a 4 oz hammer.
