Thread: Straightening bone?

I just rescaled an old Marconi that had cheap acrylic scales with a bone set from Classic Shaving. They look fantastic but the blade is way off center when closing it and presses firmly against one side. Is there a way to center the blade in the scales or straighten the scales?

Are you sure the pivot pin did not get bent when you were pinning? Sometimes that is the culprit and not the scales themselves Hope this helps.
Should have added...do the scales sit flat/straight on a flat surface? Did you do the wedge yourself? Do the holes in the scales line up? Theres a few factor that could contribute to your problem.

The scales were actually curved with both sides turned outward. I think the pin stayed straight, I knew from a previous experience not to hammer too hard and bend them. I broke a nice set of vintage deer antler scales on my first try.

Also I bought them half pre assembled with the wedge and first pin already in place. All I did was put the blade end pin in.

These sound like either the Dovo or the TI scales????

You need to check the Razor itself for a bent /twisted/uneven tang

You have to have the razor out anyway for the fix so check it while it is out, anyone who rescales should do this first anyway..

Lay the razor on a flat surface, place a finger on top of the tang and push it flat look at the spine in relation to the surface...
Turn it over do the same and look again, this will show really quickly whether the tang is off or the spine is twisted..

You also can sight down the razor while it is in the scales to check but it is hard to decide if the problem is the scales or the razor, much easier to check every razor before you pin them...

In that sticky are several methods to fix this, I am still looking for the fantastic drawing that Chalie/spazola did for the easiest fix which is filing the inside of the scales to adjust the fit of the razor in there...

You state the blade pushes firmley against one side,is it at the tang?is it pushing the blade to the other side at the tip?
Mabey relieve the inside a tiny bit were/If the tang is rubbing with a popsicle stick and fine sandpaper,just a thought.

I'm not sure of the maker, their the "light bone" from Classic Shaving. I'm not at all saying anything negative about the business, I'm not upset in any way because it's a natural material and not man made.
Anyway, I have already pinned the razor not knowing any better but both sides of the scales had an outward bow out of the package (like a Y shape from the pinned end)
Also here is a pic if it helps and one just to show the beauty of the scales, if all else fails I'll just deal with it because they look great. This is the one that I posted about that I received as a Christmas gift from my uncle, it belonged to my great grandfather. I honed it up and have shaved with it several times but the acrylic scales had some cracks around the pin so I wanted to replace the, with something of better quality since I won't be parting with it in this lifetime.

They should be "bowed" outward that is correct, the "Wedge" does that and it creates tension and adds strength to the scales..

It looks like you pinned it straight too, it very well could be a non-straight tang on the razor, it isn't that uncommon we all hate it, but it happens..

You might also be able to adjust them slightly by tapping on the pivot pin on the side you want the point of the razor to move and tap that pin only on the top side of the pin this gives a slight movement to the point...

I BTW do not recognize the maker on those scales, they do not look to be Dovo or TI and I thought that was all Classic was using...

Ok, thanks for all the input. I was thinking about doing that to the pins but didn't know if it would work or not since this is only my second rescale. The other was about 10 minutes before this and were a set of faux tortoise from Classic as well that turned out great. I do think they're TI from what I've seen due to the pointed end on the non tang end. I'll tinker around with them and see what I can accomplish but I still plan on shaving with it in the morning
