    Default Coating

    Hey,

Just finished a piece of furniture and it needs a hard durable coating, knowing that many here talk this over well do you think varathane diamond wood finish is a good choice? would it be good for hard wood scales as well?

You made that?! What a talented bunch we have here! SRP never ceases to amaze me. Nice job! I got no advice for you though on the staining. I've done a ton of carpentry, but absolutely zero wood treatment.

Yeah, not talent but it was patience. I went so slow i could see the mistakes before i made them.

Well I don't know about using it for scales as I haven't any experience with that, but using it for your chair would be perfectly fine. Just be careful because it's winter in Newfoundland, don't do it in your unheated garage, make sure the temperature is over 16 - 17 or it won't flow out properly as it cures. Good to get some air moving over it as well, put a fan a ways away from it, just make sure the fan's not stirring up dust. Also that finish will raise the grain on your chair, you can address that by either using a wet sponge on all the parts you intend to apply it to beforehand and then sanding the raised grain, or you could apply a stain or a coat of good quality shellac first and then it wouldn't raise the grain.

EDIT: Oh btw great work on the chair!
