Oil for razors question.
Ok yall please don't hate me for posting this!! but I really need to see what the containers look like for the oil you would use to store razors.. I have heard mineral oil and tuff glide (I think that is what its called) BUT I HAVE NO CLUE WHERE TO FIND THIS STUFF. So if you could show me what this stuff looks like i would appreciate it.

I would think any light machine oil would do fine. Right now I put a thin film of honing oil on for protectant. Mineral oil is available in any Walmart in the pharmacy section.

Go to the baby section of any store and get a bottle of baby oil. All it is is mineral oil with a light fragrance. I've used it for years with no ill effects to my razors. It also makes for a good pre-shave oil.

I've been using olive oil. Is that bad? Anyway I won't be using any oil now because I just bought one of those silicone treated cotton razor sleeves from Superior Shave.

Thanked: 498I'm a Tuff-Glide fan, you can find at most gun shops even sporting good stores. Sharptonn recomended it to me and I love the stuff. It goes on real thin and it stays put as a thin film, does not run down even the most polished of blades.

The long lived vegetable oils like Avocado, Olive, Camellia and Grape Seed are OK if you smell it before applying. You will know when they go rancid which is a rather fowl odor. It takes several years for these long shelf-life vegetables to go rancid. Just throw it out if it smells bad and buy some fresh oil. The rancid oil won't hurt the blade, it just smells bad. The nice thing about vegetable based oils is that they also make for a good pre-shave prep if you like an oil based pre-shave.
The mineral (fossil fuel oil derived) based oils almost have eternal life. Light 3in1, pure mineral, honing or even synthetic engine oil will work. Some have an odor. I use a few drops of pure clove oil in pure mineral oil to give it a nice smell. I also use silicone treated sleeves on all my carbon blades, but I still oil them as well. You should not use mineral based oils for pre-shave as they tend to clog the pores and some are carcinogenic.

I've been using baby(mineral) oil either pre or post shave for over ten years with no ill effects. In fact it was recommended to me by a dermatologist to help me with my rosacea. As far as it being carcinogenic, isn't everything? The air we breathe, the water we drink, the food we eat, our shampoos and soaps, even all of our favorite shaving products are all carcinogenic to varying degrees.

Thanked: 498Very good point and since vvti713 is a Houston boy, The oil capital of the lower 50 states. He should be used to a little carcinogenic intake. What doesnt kill you makes you stronger. But I'm not sure what happens when stuff kills you slowly. Oh well who wants to live forever anyway?

Wow! Take a deep breath... I have used mineral oil for years on my babies and my grandbabies butts. Feel free to use it on your face too.
Everything is NOT clinically proven to be carcinogenic including the soaps and creams we may use for shaving. Some of the individual ingredients of some commercial brands may be suspect. Fossil fuel oils and some, not all (mineral oil and petroleum jelly exepted) are clinically proven to be known carcinogens.
I sympathize with your rosacea. My doctor gave me a prescription ointment. He never recommended mineral oil, but whatever works for you. I did not mean to insight such a strong rhetorical response. Please accept my apology and my support for mineral oil if that works for you. I trust the rest of my commentary was more agreeable to you.
