I'm with shooter...I would just hold on to it until you do have the money...it'd be a shame to damage it.

Congrats on scoring that baby! I'm also in agreement that it should be done by a pro. If or when I get into learning restoration, I would not be doing it on such a nice find. Mine is quite similar but not as nice. My scales are these big ole wood clunkers. I wanted to see if anything was hiding under the patina so I busted out the rotary tool, felt wheel and some 1 micron diamond paste and cleaned a bit off. Here she be:

Very nice and I just got done shaving with the beast and it was awesome just the heft alone took out everything in its path. Now if I got it honed by a professional It could shave like a champ
