Thread: Wow what a find

Well gents I finally got my hands on a monster without breaking the bank I scored a wade and butcher celebrated meat chopper. It's in the original scales which is bone I'm going to clean it up alittle the only problem is I have never really honed a smiling blade so.

Hello and congrats! I'm not any expert of anything, but in case you didn't know I wanted to save you some hassle. The shoulder of that razor is going to give you problems. You're gonna have to clear out some of that area with some sort of grinder before you try to hone it. Otherwise, you'll spend days and days trying to figure out why the toe seems sharp but the heel is not. Honing the smile won't be the issue for you. It's pretty easy to figure that portion out. It's working around that heel shoulder that I'd be worried about. Awesome find btw! I'm sure the experts will tell you more, but I just wanted to throw that out there, for you to be aware. I've spent a lot of time dealing with something like that and it's not fun.

That looks quite good. I haven't been here long but I'm sure there someone on at SRP that you could collaborate with. Maybe he could take care of the grinding work for you then send it back for you to finish off.

No way. I'm sure you can take care of it. Maybe a DMT plate and the proper approach angle? I believe Holli4pirating has made a help thread on just this subject. It CAN be fixed. I just haven't been able to do it well, and spent so much time trying to hone a razor with that issue that I wanted to make sure you were aware before you went to honing. If an expert doesn't pipe in shortly, I'd send someone a PM. Not me of course. Heck they might tell you I'm full of it, and there's no problem they can see.

IMO that razor needs to be reground, reducing the stabalizers width, and height. Thats what I would have done anyways...

Please don't do a dang thing with it if you don't know how, especially any sort of regrinding. Please just send it to someone who is well versed (a pro) on honing to correct any deficiencies, then you can touch up the edge when needed down the road. BTW, those are original horn scales.

I'm not doing anything to it cause I not experienced enough I'm just afraid I won't be able to pay anyone to Regrind it and I wanna keep the scales cause that's the awesome part it's ORIGINAL

See? I knew somebody who knew something would give better advice. lol. I would remind you though, the only way to develop the skills necessary to fix these things is to try, and try, and try. There is no significant skill gain in putting a razor in the mail, or paying someone for services rendered. But anyhow, send it to a professional honer. I think that's like twenty bucks or something? Surely that'll be the easiest and best solution, since we are talking about your one and only special meat chopper razor.
