The Novus 1,2,3 system is claimed to be safe for bakelite & celluloid. I usually unpin if pivots are gunked up tho.

Thanked: 50Back in the late 70's, I was working on a renovation of an old theatre off of St. Marks Place in the Lower East Side. There was a an example of the power of nitrocellulose as it was used in film stock. The earliest film stock was highly flammable and NYC code required projection booths to be made out of steel framed sheet asbestos. The walls of the old booth were scorched. A couple of bad fires were there. Film stock world continue to burn even after it was underwater.
Cell rot is just another example of a chain chemical reaction found in celluloid, just at a much slower rate.

Celluloid Cleaning
What else isn't healthy for it is long soaks in barbicide. forgot to take a new to me razor out one night and destroyed the celluloid!!

I use oxyclean .. Laundry detergent stuff in running water.. Seems to work fine..it hasn't caused a riff in the time continuim or anthing like that yet..
