I will be within a stone throw of his shop this coming June. Are appointments required? Is the shop open to the public? I tried email to order a custom-made SR directly from them but it does not seem to be the best method of communication. I might have to settle for whatever they have in their showroom.

If you want, you can read my post about my experience about the two of days I spent in company of Mastro Livi.
http://straightrazorpalace.com/razor...xperience.html
He is a very kind and gentle person and I am sure he will be happy to welcome you in his shop, near Perugia. What I did was calling the shop on the phone and make sure they were open. Mastro Livi welcomed me in his shop ten minutes later and with a kind and friendly smile. A very kind gentleman.
I ordered from him a razor, although he has tens of them in shelves ready and available for clients. I guess it is up to you: if you believe the razors on the shelves suite you - and, oh man, what a gorgeous show! - you can pick one and that's it. But please be warned: the choice won't be easy at all!
In case you want something more personal or custom, Mastro Livi certainly is the most helpful and gentle person of this planet: he will be more than happy to help you in creating your razor, like he did with me.
However, I guess you should phone the shop or send a mail (in case they can reply to it) and ask for an appointment. In case you need help with the Italian language, I will certainly be happy in assisting you in this.

Thanks for sharing this with me,razorguy. I will be in Assisi for a day or two. I could take a taxi ride to Mastro Livis's shop, it shouldn't be too far away. I will make sure to call before going there. Io no parlo il italiano...

Well, it seems you are doing great with the Italian language!
Mastro Livi's shop is about 20 minutes away from Assisi but I am afraid you won't find a taxi for the ride. Or in case you will, I guess it would be very expensive.
You could however go there by train and then from the train station you can go to Mastro's shop by taxi. The train will take about 30 minutes to get there.
