    Default A couple newbie questions

Being a newbie to razors, I think these questions will be fairly easy for you fellas to answer.

    1. I am making a guess that it is better to make brass liners when you rescale a razor with wood, horn or bone, so it makes it stronger and more rigid?

    2. About those small washers you fellas use when you peen heads on the pins, where could one purchase those?

    3. If you cannot purchase them, how would one go about making them?

    4. Are the washers really neccesery?

Thanks in advance for any pointers you fellas can give me.
    All the best

    1. Not necessarily. I almost never use liners, unless the wood exceptionally thin or prone to breakage (burl woods, etc.)
    2. Microfasteners.com. Size #0 (FWB0) and #0Wide (FWBW0)
    3. Check out Bill's resto cd...it has instructions for making them.
    4. IMO, yes.

I'll just offer more elaboration on #2:

You should get BOTH types of washers.

#0 = for outside the scales
#0W = a buffer b/w the tang an the scales at the pivot-pin (and only at that location)

Thank you both for your help. I'll try to get an order in tommorow for some of those washers, quite a few in both sizes as reccomnded, If liners are not that iportant, then I can get to making a set of scales for these two blades I have sooner than I thought.
    Thanks again fellas

You can also use the FWBW0 for making bullseye pins. Stack a small one on top of a big one and peen. Particularly after you buff them together, which rounds the edges and smooths them out, it looks similar to one of the old bullseye pins. I don't care for the FWBW0 at the pivot...they're too thick to me. I prefer the .062"IDx.188"ODx.010" thick phosphor bronze ones I get from smallparts.com. That's just a preference thing, though.
