I was wondering more about the lead dip than anything. They they seem have a loose check of sharpness I think slicing through some paper would be better.

The lead keeps a constant temperature for hardening the steel. Now we use a specialized dip of salts for that which are non-toxic.
The horn removes any wire edge that may have formed in the original honing. The horizontal power grinder hone will often leave one. The hair is a somewhat better test since it is non abrasive. You can final strop a razor on paper due to the silica content.

The process is what it is and speeding it up has lead to some tempering problems that i hear about from time to time.
