    Default New trick?

I was de-pinning an old set of horn scales tonight. I was at that crittical step of using a nail punch and a hammer to tap the old (sanded flush) pin through the scales. I hate this part, because you never know if the scales are too brittle (old horn often is) and they will crack. I gave a few taps, and while the pivote pin popped right through, the spacer pin stuck.

SO, I took some tuf-glide and added it to the pin area, work the scales around, and got the oil into the area, then re-tapped. The pin came through no problem!

New trick? For me it is........

A little heat might also help. Steel expands at .000006 in /degree F. Plastics are about three times that. Hot water will cause a 100 degree shift.

LOL! Perhaps, but I have my hands all over these scales, etc. when I'm trying to work out these pins, I can't imagine trying to do that apply heat, and not burn my self!

    Good to know though, thanks!

Celluloid is volatile, extremely flammable. That's why I like the lubrication idea better

That really is an outstanding suggestion, Chris.
