Bowling ball scales ?
I was just wondering? I remember reading something about making scales out of a bowling ball. Has anyone here successfully done that ? Are they hollow or filled with something besides what is on the outside to control the weight ? Thanks, Mack

The post, IIRC, was made by a member interested in doing that and either asking where he could get the raw material, or maybe asking if the material he had was made of the 'right stuff.' I don't know that anyone ever came up with the answer. Get an old used U-dot or 'Hammer' (bowling balls) and take it to a band saw. You'll soon have plenty of urethane ..... if that is any good for scales ?

Might be a bit heavy?

Thanked: 3164I kind of remember that post Jimmy - I don't think that there was any definitive answer, though.
This person has a tutorial about sawing various types of bowling ball in half. She makes pen blanks out of them and doesn't recommend sawing the earlier Ebonite (hard rubber - kills the blade) balls.
The main problem with the 'more suitable' acrylic balls is that the core is a different material, so you can only use the thick outer shell - and even then you have to straighten it:

I used to bowl twenty some years ago. Had a black U-dot and a red hammer. Great hook balls drilled full finger tip. I began having trouble with my finger joints and that ended the sport for me. Ain't worth the pain.
