Thread: The Transition Stone

Try jointing the edge after the 1k, lightly dragging the edge on the corner of the 3k before honing on it, to start with a straight edge and remove any weak steel. Then re-set the bevel on the 3k, it should not take long.

Often I will joint again before the finish stone to ensure a strong edge. Stropping just before the finish stone also helps. I use a canvas Chrome Oxide strop, but have had good results with plain vintage Horse Hide strop.

I have also had good luck by side honing 20, ½ inch strokes on the transition stone to remove all the 1k stria, it will also straighten the edge somewhat , not as well as jointing, but the rough 1k stria will be removed, then lay down your transition stria and begin polishing the bevel without a ragged edge.

I know I'm a complete noob when it comes to honing, but the edges that have fallen apart after bevel set have had quality issues with the metal. I think jointing at the 3k might do the trick to get to good steel. I will try it.
