Thread: Iwasaki - breadknifing - Jim Rion - translation correction

By sheer chance this evening I found myself looking at Jim Rion's website.
Jim is the guy who translated the Iwasaki document.
Jim has stated that in a recent visit with Iwasaki he learned that he had to make a correction.

Here is his text .....

I made a translation error, of course.

On my recent visit to Iwasaki-san, I asked him about the particularly confusing section, 3.5 Edge Finishing.

What I translated as "standing" should have been translated as "lengthwise."

Instead of honing the razor standing, you hone it flat but pull it parallel to the edge...meaning, not forward or backward, but sideways, 1mm or 2mm. "

My take on this is "not bread knifing" !

Yep, this was caught and discussed here quite some time ago, haha. Actually probably several times now - but it's all good - we can't all read every post.

Well, yes, the saying is that it takes two to have an argument and I have held up my side occasionally.

All he does is make super short strokes because that allows for best control and lightest pressure. It is not easy to maintain the same amount of light pressure with long strokes across the entire hone surface, much easier with very short strokes. It does not take too many to finish the edge too.

This still means edge straight down on hone? Like trying to cut the hone? Just little strokes. Correct?
