I meant to post these links sooner, for anyone doing their own research on the various British Stones. Even if the representatives of the various societies listed are unable to help personally, they can often put you in touch with individuals who can.
British Geological Survey British Geological Survey (BGS) - Geoscience information and advice
The Geology Society Geological Society - Home
The Institute of Quarrying The Institute of Quarrying
The Mineral & Locality Database http://mindat.org/
The Natural History Museum Research and curation | Natural History Museum
FYI, I have already contacted the North Wales branch of The Institute of Quarrying, seeking information on the Cutler's Green Hone that everybody seems to have so much trouble tracking down.

For all the HAD sufferers here, in the course of my investigations into the Devonshire Oilstone, I've come across another UK hone and this one is described as being particularly fine and is known as the Moughton Whetstone. There is a Moughton mine in the county of Yorkshire, however this stone is supposed to come from Austwick in Lancashire, although given changes in the county boundaries over the years my information may just be out of date. The only thing I can tell you about this stone thus far is that it has a banded appearance. Looks like another one to add to the list of hones I want that hardly anyone else has heard of.

Alex

Going back to the Devonshire Oilstone, I've just received information concerning an article that was published in Geology Today entitled, "Devon: Home of the Best Whetstone." That's a promising title no? It is available online for $30 + $4 sales tax, but I'm trying to track down a hard copy version. It's Volume 10, issue number 5 in case any members here subscribe to the magazine already and have a copy to hand.

Alex

I've already contacted the North of England branch of the Institute of Quarrying to see if I can find out anything more about this stone. On the website where I found the picture it did say that this stone was a popular choice for sharpening razors in the past. I just want to know if the stone was mined and retailed and thus an article of national commerce or if it was just a local thing, in which case I'll be going straight to the mine and extracting some of the stone myself.

Alex
