One Stone Honing.. from Lynn and Glen

Let me sorta explain how this thread started, Lynn and I were doing some general BS'n one day on the phone about 1 month ago..

He says "Dude yer not going to believe what I have been working on" Well it turns out that for that past few months he and I were doing pretty much the exact same things...

We had both been working various Stones and Hones using a variation of Lynn's "20 Circles to Sharp" routine that works so well on setting the bevel...
Turns out that yes you can use just about any hone that you want to shave off of to get a close comfortable shave, all it has to do is be able to create or hold a slurry...
There is no magical stone, they pretty much all work, but you have to do your part.. There is also no complicated routine to follow, you just do circles then finishing strokes...
I have done this on a Norton 8k, a Naniwa 8k & 10k a Shapton 8k a Thuringen, an Escher, a Coticule, the Chinese PHIG, even a Nakayama Midori...

Here is where this is different from a normal progression routine at least IMHO, I have found that this hits the first time though, about 70% of the time, some are higher like the Nakayama, some lower..
This will be great for those of you that don't own a ton of razors, and that have the time to mess with the ones that need re-touching after a test shave... You really need a bevel setter, for those razors that need heavier lifting, I used a King 1k during all my testing since they are so cheap to buy, and straight forward to use...

I will let Lynn take this from here, as he did way more testing on this then I did...

As Glen said, this was actually pretty funny that we were experimenting on similar lines.

So, with all the Coticule hype, and cot method discussion lately, I had already found out that you could pretty much do these methods with any natural stone and come away with OK results. It worked on razors in decent condition and razors that had bevels properly established. If it didn't hit right away, you could tinker some and these methods will work. The question to me was that because I could use the circle method on the synthetic stones and come away with excellent results almost 10 out of 10 times first time through the process, could I use the circle method on the natural stones just varying the slurry thickness and what would the results be.

So.........I took my Escher stone, largest Coticule, Asagi, Kiita and Ohzuku and decided to have some fun. I took some pics of the stones that you will see below.

I used 20 brand new razors and 10 used/vintage razors on each stone. With the used or vintage razors, I set the bevels on a 1K Naniwa Chosera before going to the naturals. I used a generic nagura stone from JapanWoodworker for slurry on all stones. Its' the white looking stone in the pics below.

The method was pretty straight forward. I used the circle method as seen on the video from the NC Gathering and applied it to the natural stones only I varied the amount of slurry on each. YouTube - Straight Razor Place '09 Convention. Lynn Honing #1

Damn those are some badass looking stones Lynn. Raises my heart rate looking at them.

I've been using the circle technique/x strokes that since Lynn turned me on to it some months ago with success.

I've only done the one stone honing with coticules since the dulicot method was first presented. I did it to see if I could but I have a bunch of stones so prefer to use them. Good to see that those folks who only have one can get there with persistence and perseverance.

Oh-Oh Lynn now you've gone and done it. Now there will be an avalanche of guys selling all their hones and just keeping one or two to do everything.

I still pretty much use my synthetics for day to day because they are so reliable and consistent. I do use my Escher alot for finishing, but this exercise was a lot of fun............

HUGE +1... This was fun, and it does work, but the 70% consistency is to low for me also...
I get near 100% hits, when using all Synthetics, or a Synthetic run to 8k then a Natural finisher...

Well "at this point in time" I think the stage has been set for
one hone edge refresh and maintainability.

Regarding Glenn's videos...
I like the variety of strokes that Glenn uses as he
progresses through the process. I also like Glenn's
use of tape. His consistent use of tape makes a lot of
sense with this method.

And yes it works... months before I read this thread I
found I could use these same tricks. I think Glenn and Lynn
have been dropping hints for a long time....

I have been doing same routine with Mejiro nagura and a tomonagura on one stone right after the 1k chosera, it works just great for me. I always start with thick slurry , refresh with madium slurry and then dilute until I finish on water only. Main stroke is circles with a few x-strokes right before the next slurry phase or dilution.

I too find that the best consistency comes from synthetics also, for me at least, honing on synthetics is faster. I like the nagura method because it is great fun, it some how allows me to feel the natural stone and the honing effect, and the results majority of the times are great.

This is awesome! I love all these ideas, its so great to have these things to play with. I pretty much stick with synthetics up to 8k and then go to a natural finisher, but this is something I'm going to have to experiment with!
